The Medical Imaging Interaction Toolkit (MITK)

The Medical Imaging Interaction Toolkit (MITK) is a free open-source software system for development of interactive medical image processing software. MITK combines the Insight Toolkit (ITK) and the Visualization Toolkit (VTK) with an application framework. As a toolkit, MITK offers those features that are relevant for the development of interactive medical imaging software covered neither by ITK nor VTK, see ToolkitFeatures for details.

MITK can be used or integrated with existing solutions in several ways, see ResearchPlatform for examples.

May 2012 The MITK Diffusion 2012 application has been released. Installers for the major platforms can be found here. The source code is available in the GIT repository. The summary of new features is listed here. The MITK Diffusion application offers a selection of image analysis algorithms for the visualization, processing, and interactive exploration of diffusion-weighted MR images and related datasets.

November 2011 The MITK Diffusion 2011 application has been released. We recommend to use the 2012 version since new features were implemented, nevertheless the installer are still available in the release archive.

MITK/BlueBerry now uses the CTK plugin framework

June 2011: The BlueBerry framework has been changed to rely on the CTK plugin framework. CTK will now be build automatically during the super-build if BlueBerry is enabled. For more information, see the BlueBerry page.

New simplified MITK build system setup

March 2011: Building MITK and the necessary 3rd party libraries has been simplified a lot. We are now using the ExternalProjects feature of CMake (aka Superbuild) to download, configure and build all projects in one run. See the updated build instructions page for details.

MITK-ToF available

March 2011: The subproject MITK-ToF for range data support is now available in the GIT repository

MITK has moved to Git

March 2011: MITK has moved to Git. See MitkGit for details.

Information for users

Program modules

Among others the main application of MITK currently offers the following application modules:

  • Interactive segmentation of slices in image volumes, including interactive region growing and easy correction, interpolation of missing slices, surface generation, and volumetry
  • Point based registration of medical image volumes allows to match two images based on two corresponding sets of points
  • Rigid registration of images by combination of the ITK registration objects (transforms, optimizers, metrics, etc.)
  • Measurement of distances and angles
  • Volume visualization, GPU-based, easy to modify transfer functions
  • Movie generation (Windows only)
  • Deformable Registration
